Harvey Awards nominations open

The Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con have just released the official Nomination Ballot for this year's Harvey Awards, honouring work published in the 2012 calendar year.

Named in honour of the late Harvey Kurtzman, one of the US comic industry's most innovative talents, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art.

The 26th Annual Harvey Awards will be presented Saturday, 7th September 2013 as part of the Baltimore Comic-Con.

For the first time, Harvey Awards nomination ballots may be submitted using an online form. If you are a comics professional, you can vote online at  harveyawards.org/2013-nomination-ballot/. This will enable an easier and faster method for the professional community to submit their nominees.

Ballots are due for submission by Monday 6th May 2013 - and there's nothing to stop British comic creators or publications being nominated, so why not do so...

Additionally, if voters would prefer, ballots may be downloaded from the same page, completed, and sent via postal mail or e-mail.  All methods of submission are permitted.

Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators - those who write, draw, ink, letter, colour, design, edit, or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. The Harvey Awards are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.

In addition to being available on the website, ballots will be sent to all major publishers and distributed at comic conventions. We look forward to your participation and input in this process, and we look forward to seeing you at the Baltimore Comic-Con and the Harvey Awards.

Companies and individuals interested in sponsoring the 2013 Harvey Awards may do so by contacting us at harveys@baltimorecomiccon.com.

This year's Baltimore Comic-Con will be held 7-8th September, 2013.  The ceremony and banquet for the Harvey Awards will be held Saturday night, September 8th.  Additional details about the Harvey Awards and the awards ceremony will be released over the next few months.

The Harvey Awards are one of the US comic book industry's oldest and most respected awards. With a history of over 26 years, the last eight in conjunction with the Baltimore Comic-Con, the Harveys recognize outstanding achievements in 22 categories. They are the only industry awards nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.
The Baltimore Comic-Con is celebrating its 14th year of bringing the comic book industry to the Baltimore and Washington D.C. area. For more information visit www.baltimorecomiccon.com.

Harvey Awards 2012 nominations launched

The Executive Committees of the Harvey Awards and the Baltimore Comic-Con have just released the official Nomination Ballot for this year's Harvey Awards. Named in honour of the late Harvey Kurtzman, one of the industry's most innovative talents, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art.

Ballots are due for submission by Monday 16th April 2012. In addition to being available on the website, ballots will be sent to all major publishers and distributed at comic conventions.

Returning for his fourth consecutive Harvey Awards, Scott Kurtz will be the Master of Ceremonies for the awards banquet, to be held Saturday 8th September 2012 as part of the Baltimore Comic-Con.

"After Scott, Stan Lee, and the Fake Stan Lee brought the house down again last year, we had to have him back!" said Marc Nathan, promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. "We are thrilled that Scott agreed to come back to Baltimore and help to make the Harvey Awards ceremony as fun and exciting as the last few years have been!"

Scott Kurtz has been creating his own comic strips since he got hooked on Garfield in the 4th grade. In 1998, his comic strip, PvP, debuted on the world wide web (pvponline.com) with 700 daily readers. Over the last 10 years, PvP has grown into a genuine Internet phenomenon, growing in readership to an estimated 150,000 readers per day, a monthly title from Image comics, winning a Harvey Award in 2010 for Best Online Comics Work, and winning the Eisner Award for best digital comic in 2006.

Scott co-wrote the excellent book How To Make Webcomics and co-founded webcomics.com to help assist others in forging their own creative destinies.

Nominations for the Harvey Awards are selected exclusively by creators - those who write, draw, ink, letter, color, design, edit or are otherwise involved in a creative capacity in the comics field. The Harvey Awards are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.

This year's Baltimore Comic-Con will be held 8-9th September.  The ceremony and banquet for the Harvey Awards will be held Saturday night, 8th September.  Additional details about the Harvey Awards and the awards ceremony will be released over the next few months.

• Ballots can be downloaded from HarveyAwards.org and completed forms can be e-mailed to harveyballotsAThotmail.com. All ballots must include requested professional verification information. The  Harvey Awards may be voted on exclusively by Comic-Book creators, those who write, draw, ink, color, letter, design, edit or are involved in the creative aspect of comics. Fans, retailers, distributors, and accounting personnel votes will not be counted.

Harvey Award Nom for Sean Michael Wilson and Mitsuhiro Asakawa's 'Ax'

Ax: Alternate Manga edited by Sean Michael Wilson and Mitsuhiro Asakawa and published by Top Shelf Publishing, has been nominated for a Harvey Award for Best American Edition of Foreign Material.

"The Harvey Awards are one of the comic book industry's oldest and most respected awards," says Sean, who was born in Scotland but now lives in Japan and has several British titles to his credit, including A Christmas Carol for Classical Comics and Iraq: Operation Takeover, which was drawn by Lee O'Connor, as well as published work for Kodansha and NBM.

"The Harveys recognize outstanding achievements in over 20 categories," he continues. "They are the only industry awards both nominated by and selected by the full body of comic book professionals. So, it's very pleasing for us all that Ax has been selected by comic book professionals, hopefully recognising the significant step forward it is in showing the work of individual, mature style manga artists from Japan.

"Past winners in this category include Lone Wolf and Cub, Moebius, Akira and Persepolis - good company to be in!

"Just to get the nomination, from out of hundreds of possible books, is great, especially as this is a kind of democratic vote system choice, not a 'panel of judges' way. So, hopefully that should help with also getting interest in our other book plans."

Britain-based talent also up for an award includes New Zealander Roger Langridge for his work on BOOM! Studios The Muppet Show (and also for best writer, on Thor: The Mighty Avenger); Duncan Fergedo for his work on Hellboy; Frank Quitely for Best Cover Artist (for his work on Batman and Robin); and Northern Ireland's Garth Ennis for The Darkness.

• Any comic book professionals who feel like voting for Ax book for the final winner can do so on the Harvey website: http://www.harveyawards.org/The deadline for voting is 6th August 2011

ILEX Manga title wins Harvey Award

UK publisher Ilex’s bestselling The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga has been announced as the winner of the 2010 Harvey Award for ‘Best American Edition of Foreign Material’, and was also recently shortlisted for the prestigious Eisner Award.

Written by Helen McCarthy, the book is the first authorised English language biography on Japan’s most celebrated artist of the 21st century and I think it will interest followers of this blog. I also worked with Helen on Manga Max magazine a few years back.

Osamu Tezuka has often been called the Walt Disney of Japan, but he was far more than that. Tezuka was Disney, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Tim Burton and Carl Sagan, all rolled into one incredibly prolific package, and he changed the face of Japanese culture forever.

This book reveals what makes him one of the key figures of 20th century pop culture. Packed with stunning images, many never before seen outside Japan, it pays tribute to the work of an artist, writer, animator, doctor, entrepreneur and traveller whose insatiably curious mind created two companies, dozens of animated films and series, and over 150,000 pages of comic art in one astonishingly creative lifetime.

ILEX call The Art of Osamu Tezuka: God of Manga "an amazing adventure for the manga and anime neophyte, an essential reference for the confirmed fans, and a visual treat for anyone who loves art".
